Five Days Week
Five days week means more productivity as oppose to six days of slumber because the last two days of the week seem to crawl at snail's pace. The concept started with Henry Ford declaring a $5 per hour and 8 hours day for 5 days of productivity in 1962. Since then lot has been said and done and work culture has seen a sea change in countries of Europe and today France has a directive in place that 35 hours are enough for working in a week. Although the newly appointed French President Nicholas Sarkozy thinks differently and would like to abolish the existing directive as soon as possible. The reason for shifting to a five days week has been seen as indulgence by employers all the time and they find reason to get you to work on that 6 day always. But sadly what they fail to understand is the fact that an unhappy employee will not yield result no matter how many days you get the person to work. The quality will suffer, the productivity will fall, absent ism will rise, in a nutshell organizational output at the end of the day will be less than desirable.
Then there are those hapless lawyers, software engineers, journalists who work seven days week, 24x7 environment and are either always tired or are soon burnt out. They move on to doing newer things and feel rejuvenated in their new areas of work. They evolve as people and find happiness, but organizations suffer the loss of talent. I have failed to understand why this trend is not curbed by smaller organizations and actually focus on the happiness quotient of the workers.
There are four cardinal laws to happiness quotient. They are:
Physical Dimension
Health – Play – Pleasure
Tune in to how your body feels when you’re happy.
Intellectual Dimension
Reason- Logic-Performance
Practice quieting your mind each day, focusing on the moment
Emotional Dimension
Relationships – Self Image
Notice how you feel when you focus on the positive.
Spiritual Dimension
Beliefs-Concepts-Creativity
Allow nature, beauty and creativity to be an everyday part of your life.
All these above laws come into work on daily basis for a worker. As the middle class strives to keep sanity in booming India we all bear the brunt of keeping our jobs come hell or high water. But how many of us are really happy to come to work and start each day with new fervour and endure the five/six days week? People we have got to take things in our own hands. We surely can change our own lives and stay happy if we stayed in tune with our lives and not depend too much on our organisations for making the change I think we should start looking inwards to stay happy with our work lives a little more and make the needful changes. More in the next blog, in the meantime if Meeaawwwooo the two cents in comments will be of great help to carry forward the conversation.
So long.
