C'est la vie

Clothes Horse - a framework on which to hang clothes (as for drying); according to Wiki it also refers to a person excessively or obsessively interested in clothes, often to a humorous extent.

I am a veritable clothes horse, I simply keep on buying clothes. And I totally hate myself for that. It is useless, vain and leaves a huge carbon foot print. But the urge is so strong that it just takes over and overrides all better judgment and I end up sleep walking into a store and buy some outfit or the other. My husband thinks it is the same stuff I keep on buying and no two dresses look different! Personally some I love and keep on wearing them day in and day out (must be the repetitive variety), but some I have huge remorse over and they just veg on my wardrobe shelf till I give them away to charity in every six months. Most of the times I am angry at myself for these sudden bouts of madness. So for a decade now I have been fighting to disclipline myself but I so miserably fail to meet my goal.

As a close friend is getting married soon I have a huge excuse to buy some new stuff but I have been just telling myself to be a sensible person and not waste money in these times of recessions, I have no qualms in admitting that it is indeed giving me sleepless nights. As luck would have it this just had to be the time when I catch some Hollywood trivia to agonize myself further. My great hero Johnny Depp had impulsively bought an island while on a holiday!!! Wow! May be not all of us can do that but surely it must be great fun to just impulsively buy off an island or a village as I would like in the mountains somewhere!

Here I am curbing the extreme urge to buy a new sari or an outfit (still in two minds there) and Johnny goes and buys an island! But I am sure even for Depp this must be one of those expensive impulsive purchases, but as he had invested in property I am sure he will reap the dividends well so he definitely does not have to go through the so called 'buyer's remorse' thereafter. So just thought I will publicly list my crimes and as dear reader you will find them absolute horrendous may be you can suggest how I can cure myself of this illness. Or even better if you can list what is the most expensive impulsive purchase that you have made probably it will be funnier. So here I go...

1. Buying a Go Trek jacket and instantly burning it accidentally within couple of hours and come to think of it I don't particularly like the colour - Rs. 1800.00
2. The high heels, low heels, no heels shoes that keep on piling on my shoe rack. Total cost - Rs 5,000.00
3. Trendy tops which I did not wear more than once - Rs 800 (thank heavens these were all from export reject stores)
4. Accumulated value of clothes which I purchased but hardly wore - Rs. 15,000.00 (I just realized I am a horrible person)

Please tell me dear readers am I mad or should I be institutionalized?

Darling if you think that you should be instititionalised think what we should do with Rajeev??? The number for him on clothes which he forgets that he has would be good enough for me to run my home for atleast 3 months... and yes a little wiredness or a lot of wiredness :-)as applicable... is always welcome, so chill...

being impulsive about certain things in life is perfectly ok. that's healthy. but if the habit demands that i write a blog cribbing about it, i wld like to get rid of it. i am very impulsive about buying books. but when i feel i am going on and on, then i ask myself have i read the previous ones. if not, do i want to read them? that helps me decide and most of the time i could control myself. u just think about clothes u have been keeping aside because u can wear them only on an occasion. then decide if u really want to add another useless one to that list. maybe sometimes u wld buy even after this, but chances are gradually u wld gain more self-control next time. but if u really cant, then feel good thinking that when u give them for charity many people benefit. but there are other less costly ways of helping people. so... best of luck.

No way hun... its absolutely normal... Look at me.. I keep buying skimpy little thingees... which I end up not wearing, due to the lack of occassions or proper places to wear them to... Or I wear them so covered up that I should have bought a full sleeved & high necked thing instead...LOL!
'Cognative dissonence' has become a regular part of my life...!!
But what the hell... you live only once...!!!
So,Carry on dear....Here's to many more...
(PS- do let me know, if you get fed up with saris, before you give them to charity though... :D)

Well, thanks everyone, it indeed is fun too know all the opinions. Indeed being clothed and influential is definitely a better position! So Nishikutumbo I do take your advise on that. And Mirage I shall definitely pass on the numerous saris to a fellow sari lover like yourself who will definitely appreciate them. Kast I donate annually to three organisations who work with children, conservation issues and poverty alleviation. So I guess charity just does not end at home with me. Meeeaaawwwooo would love to know a little more regarding the pressing qualities which qualifies me for the asylum. And Bisha as always thanks for accepting the weirdness that I am.

the word is institutionalised.
the remark is hmm.
the reason being, [1]there are far more important crimes than yours. [2] clothes are kind of extensions of us besides shoes, accessories et al. [3] we shed skin. [4] most importantly, i am there in line before you. and trust me by the time they are done with the admission processes for me, the entire unit will be scrapped. :).

Ha- I'm no good in clothe buying at all. Most of it I don't wear more than once. At least I can give it to my mom who will keep it or pass it on.
The most I spend these days is on fiber and books and I don't regret it. I wouldn't even want an island.

And I love the creations you come out with the fibres, so keep buying. I just loved the baktus. I gasp at yours and Leane's knitting talents, simply mind blowing! Last winter I learnt to knit socks on dpns through the internet. May be this year I will learn the toe up sock. I have limited skills here not to mention talent! You know what? This conversation has actually I think has finally rid of this bad habit of cloth hoarding. Thanks a bunch everyone.

Institutionalized? You should face the firing squad. :P kidding.

I don't know if this is true or not, but my class V history book had a chapter about Garibaldi. It seems he kept only two shirts - he'd wear the second when he had washed the first.

Ha ha ha...my crimes run deep ;-) but this public discussion of my shortcoming has indeed guided some sense into me. May be I can only idolize Garibaldi here. But am surely going to try and cure myself of this madness.
