Internet Blues

Recently wanted to install a broadband connection at home. For some reason thought it was sensible to get a connection from the landline provider hence applied for the same. I was told it will take about seven working days for the connection to be istalled. Well that was fine with me. But what ensued was a series of unfortunate events harrasing the life out of me. Several reminders and conversations later the line man did arrive with a faulty modem, and had to be coaxed again to get a modem, which functioned. Finally he did put the connection together, but other than the single one mail, which I wrote as a test no action took place on the internet. The connection never worked and finally had to get yet another connenction from another service provider to get some sanity back in my life. As a result now we have one faulty connection, which again will be a pain to surrender I am sure and right now I barely have the strength to handle another unfruitful conversation with the telephone company. The highs and lows of life today are so defined by the speed of one's internet connection that it is scary.

Saw a film called Die Hard version 4.0 recently. In a world, which has completely changed Bruce Willis remians the unchanged and unchallenged Detective John McClain. Set in a world where people are constantly connnected through the internet and the terrorists too are making the most of the situation by breaking through all kinds of databases scared the wits out me. Had seen some amaeturish hacking and eavesdropping by people around me but what this film proposes (even in the remotest sense) is very scary. A life where privacy can only be attained as a concept and nothing beyond that and people are constantly trying to outsmart each other with newer and better algorithms seems not too far away or impossible. The severe depression I went through due to the delay of getting a functioning internet connenction has made me realise we are ever so connected to this information highway which allows us to be seen, heard and reach out is really here to stay and permanently change our lives. If this happens to a person like me who is not at all hooked by the internet imagine how real it must be for a person who is deeply entrenched into this culture.

The action is mind blowing and defintely bigger better and bolder than the last three. People, true to McClain style of the world before the times of internet he blows a helicopter with a flying car, what else could you ask for? Every buck spent was rightly invested on a weekend! The long and short of it is that somethings are going to happen which might seem strange yet incredibly changing the fabric of the society, but there is still hope with a old world cop like him putting the terrorists in body bags where they belong! So afterall there is a silver lining to the internet blues!

Are you kidding me? Didn't you see the NET?

Anyhow, having a paper on IT law as my journalism thesis and reading my fellow student's thesis on Hackers, I had a very idea about hacking. But I never really faced it till some bugger phished my Yahoo ID, which was first email id.. so you can understand almost 6 years of emails lost.

Ofcourse being the paranoid little person I had copied most of the important stuff. never kept details of bank accpunts or such in my email. No address, phone Id...if possible. While ID theft is not a big issue in India, in US where the Social Security Number defines ur existance...someone can literally take on your life. Here I think such theft issues will more related to terrorism, going by the current trend.

Hey, since I know you are technically deficient, here is few tips. Don't keep or send account numbers, phone numbers etc in ur mail inbox. Try not to keep private docs in the PC. Also, don't open emails or links from people you don't know. Even if you know them, don't open if someone justs sends you a link wothout a personal message with it. Thats how i lost my id. it was"See mt photos on Yahoo flickr" and a link and i fell for it hook line and sinker.

Also, one more thing you can do is highten ur Internet security. Which can be done by going to the "options" tab in ur browser...Ask someone who knows if you need it. Basically be changing these setting you can stops many programs from accessing ur PC without you knowing. Anyhow, since ur not Offcier McLAin or Bruce Willis..guess ur are safe :..haven't seen the movie thoug..you recommend?
