Republic Day and depression

Another Republic Day holiday. Republic Day and depression go hand in hand for me. Perhaps more so because being forty makes me realize that the things I was hopeful about my nation ten years ago will never be a reality. People will go hungry, will not have access to shelter, water, sanitation, health or education So what? We will still be celebrating Republic Day!

Politicians will remain corrupt, public service delivery will remain a dream and senior citizens will be robbed off their dignity in unending ques for accessing old age benefits but we will continue to celebrate Republic Day! Even Munna Bhai could not change the attitudes of the famed Indian "sarkari -babu"! And who says we are dying culturally! The "sarkari - babu" remains the corner stone of our Republican culture.

Endless children will breath their last in Government hospitals due to lack of proper medical attention and care but we will till celebrate Republic Day! Getting a birth and death certificate from local Municipalities will remain a bribe game for the common man but we will still be celebrating Republic Day!

I am saddened to no end for my country today.

According to Wiki, a republic is a form of government in which the people, or some significant portion of them, have supreme control over the government and where offices of state are elected or chosen by elected people. In modern times, a common simplified definition of a republic is a government where the head of state is not a monarch. That pretty much sums up India today. Power lies with the corrupt and hopeless politicians whom we have elected and have very little control over. We have to abide by what they tell us to believe. We cannot speak "without fear and cannot hold our heads high", but nonetheless we will try to believe we are a free country. Not a bright future indeed if we consider the recent 'farce' that has been plaguing the country. Not a bright scenario for our children either. How long will this continue is anybody's guess. After all "Andher nagri" is bound to  get a "chaupat raja".

The only hope for us is probably the fact that the world as we know it will end by December 2012 and then probably a more intelligent, tolerant and equitable nation will emerge. Wishful thinking? Well, I have the right to wish, don't I? After all it is a Republic dude!

You dreamed of a different nation 10 years ago.......so did I. And having been away for a decade looking at a "developed" country from up this close, I came back to our good old motherland. The reason??? Because of people like you who dared to dream, who still believe that we can change. Because of the values that we were taught lovingly by our parents and teachers. I decided to raise my child amidst these surroundings, bureaucracy and all, than believing in a fairy tale.
With that said, I hope your writer's block is gone forever. And I promise to try the creme caramel. Cheers!
