Tryst with technology

How I hate ATMs. Although since they have been around you need not meet the unfriendly and bored bank teller, before bank tellers take offense to my statement let me clarify, it applies only to all nationalised tellers in India especially State bank of India, where people just see through you. They have actually transformed it into a a level of art. But then ATM poses a different challenge. They can be out - of - cash (well, who isn't baby?); server can be down; the worst woe being mechanical malfunction ,which I faced just a while ago.

The guard was tucked inside the bank premises and did not think it was necessary for us mere mortals to know that the machine was malfunctioning so neither did he verbally inform us nor did he put up a notification saying the ominous three word, which you dread to hear, but you know it is bound to happen when you it the most applies most to elevators in high rises and ATM machines 'Out-of-Order'.

So off I went and swiped my card for some money and voila after I had followed each and every step correctly it said "Sorry, your transaction could not be completed", well, I thought that was very polite and like every other broke person in the world (ye all have my sympathies here) I shuddered when I took a print out of the available balance, the ATM machine had deducted the money but had not coughed it up. So now without any fault of my own apparently I will have to wait till the machine is fixed and they match the sum of money and thereafter it will be reversed in my account. I hope it happens, so the lesson that one can learn from my tryst is (applies only to karkas like me, people with pots and pots and money please ignore this piece of silly writing), please withdraw small amounts and check if the ATM machine is in good health. And if you are traveller from another country or a budget Indian tourist please remember this mal-functioning might just jeopardize your plans so please withdraw small amounts at one go to check. If found in good health one can proceed with the larger withdrawals.

Now I hope the bank teller is right and the money will be reversed by day end today. Keeping my fingers crossed here! De de mera 5 rupayia 12 aana...

Torn notes!! Yaaiieeeks! That never happened to me. I have been lucky with ATMs so far they haven't taken my money. The most common headache i face is faulty keypads, by which you cannot type the right pin or right amount.......But even I had my share of fun. If anyone can remember, State Bank in Kolkata came up with extra security of locked doors which needed the ATM card to open. So there was me trying to open one such door and it wouldn't budge....about six people lined up behind me tried their luck and came up with zilch. And then I committed the most unladylike display of frustration by kicking the door with my nice BATA shoes...and "Beep!" the door opened...to a round of applause and snickers from the line up behind me.

Ha ha ha! That must have felt good!!! My woes with the "undispensed" (that's the bank jargon) money continues. Yesterday the HDFC has confirmed that money was not dispensed and I shall get it with in the next 72 hours. So I keep on counting those hours!

ATM reminds me of this incident I never forget. Each time I visit an ATM with my 7 years old son around,he would very enthusiaistically take charge of the transaction,by operarting all the steps right from inserting the card till the time he gets to hand me over my hard earned money.Atleast I thought so,till this incident.Last year we went for a holiday at Kashid beach on western coast in Maharashtra and since it was sudden decision, we had to explore the accomodation once we reached there. We started from the best and obviously the most expensive Prakriti resorts out there. Before deciding to move in,we thought of taking a look at couple of alternatives so that we could save on some money. As we saw the next few places and were debating where to check in...my son kept insisting for the first one,Prakriti, for the one and only reason..it was the only one there to have a swimming pool, and although he doesnt know swimming, yet thats the place he loves to beat the heat.I tried to reason out with him explaining how costly the resort was and we have to shell out so much money just for couple of days. Not willing to give in,he gave me a simple but shocking solution..Simple for him...and shocking for me...
He just said, papa, costly hai to koi baat nahin...yahan ATM to hoga...???
I kept looking at him with disbelief for sometime, while everyone else started laughing. No wonder,as we all enjoyed a good time at Prakriti next two days,I tried to explain to him how hard we work to earn and make this possible....
I can easily compare with my childhood, when I saw both my parents working hard and struggling to give us the best of education by cutting out on material things..
No wonder,I dont derive happiness from the material things in life, but friends,relationships,values...they all matter to me..
My yet another favourite number from Beatles.."I dont care too much for money for money cant buy me love..."
and the credit card ad adds fuel to the fire saying.."For everything else there is master card..."
Now,when I go to the ATM with my son, I still let him operate the transactions, but only after he has dropped my salary cheque in the drop box....!

Yeah, plastic money makes life a whole lot easier Ritvik did get the point! After all they are the master card generation but for us simpletons it becomes more toilsome to remind them how we need to earn it as well. I applaud your way of getting to the bottom of the matters by allowing him to drop the salary cheque that would indeed make him appreciate the earning process too.Correct choice to say the least. I came to know from my colleague how one set of parents give both their salary cheques to the son and the son is suppose to run the house on that. He is responsible for the entire amount and this has turned their child into a super accountant! This might be a little extreme but it has worked wonders for them
